Ingredient solutions firm Tate & Lyle has updated its science-based greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets, following the acquisition of CP Kelco in 2024 and the expansion of its global operations and supply chain.
Under its new targets, Tate & Lyle will seek to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 63% by the year to the end of March 2036, compared with a base year ending March 2022. It is also targeting a 63% reduction in absolute Scope 3 emissions over the same period.
‘Support the transition’
“Climate change is the greatest challenge facing our planet and Tate & Lyle recognises our responsibility to reduce the impact of our business on the environment and to support the transition to a lower carbon economy,” commented Nick Hampton, chief executive, Tate & Lyle.
“That’s why sustainability is integral to the way we work at Tate & Lyle, and to the way we serve our customers. By continuing to align our goals with a 1.5°C future, we are not only building greater resilience within our operations and supply chain, we’re also actively living our purpose to create a healthier and more sustainable world.”
Other targets set by the group include a reduction in absolute Scope 3 emissions associated with Forests, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) by 43% by March 2035, while also committing to no deforestation across its primary deforestation-linked commodities by the end of 2027.
SBTi validation
It noted that its new targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and replace Tate & Lyle’s previous SBTi-validated emissions targets.
“Our updated science-based targets demonstrate our commitment to sustainable production across our operations, and our ambition to work with our customers, suppliers and partners to accelerate the reduction of emissions throughout our value chain,” added Anna Pierce, director of sustainability, Tate & Lyle.
Elsewhere, the company has reiterated several of its existing environmental commitments, including sourcing 100% of purchased electricity for its operations from renewable sources by 2030, ensuring that 100% of waste is beneficially used by the same year, and reducing water-use intensity by 15% by 2034, against a 2024 baseline.
